Midweek Missiles

The paddock's recent trend of revealing Spring Stakes contenders at Wednesday meetings continued this week with two impressive performances at Warwick Farm and Doomben.

At Warwick Farm the Tim Martin trained, Pampelonne (Rock of Gibraltar), on debut came from last to win like a very good horse. Owned by Racing NSW Chairman, Alan Bell, he has raced some pretty handy horses in the past such as Grand Armee, Schillaci, Primacy, Magic of Money, Dupain and Strada, seems to have game on again via Pampelonne.

Mick Malone retells the story of the sale of Pampelone with a vivid memory of how if occured: "He was a cracking yearling colt with a walk to die for, great strength and massive bone - just a really nice horse but, being by Rock Of Gibraltar the market frowned on him. Tim loved the colt from the minute he spotted him at the farm pre-sale but the old days of Mr Martin just buying and dealing with it later are gone, he’s actually a little soft these days! Subsequently the colt didn’t fetch his reserve in the ring and passed in.

Like at the closure of all good Sydney Easter sales, I found myself at the Yarraman Park (and co’s) marquee having a few quiet beers. I could hear Tim on his phone having a rather boisterous conversation regarding the Jestajewel colt.  Tim spotted me and handed me his phone suggesting I do my best to convince his client to buy the colt.  Much to Tim’s disappointment I failed dismally (so much so that the bloke hung up!). Listening quietly in the background was Alan Bell, he asked us what we were both rabbiting on about saying that he hadn’t seen Timmy so fired up about a horse in years, and with that Alan said I’ll take him - the rest is history!"

Pampelonne was a $140,000 purchase by Tim Martin at the 2010 Easter Yearling Sale,he is the second foal and second winner for Stakes-placed Rory's Jester mare Jestajewel, who is in foal to the Shadow with a Shadow at foot. No doubt her breeder, Neil Werrett, will be salivating at the prospect of Pampelonne kicking on for him from here.

Also, on Wednesday, the promising Danish Whiskey (Dane Shadow) resumed as hot favourite at Doomben. Trainer Liam Birchley has always had quite an opinion of this talented filly and she won well over 1200metres. Not sure where Liam Birchley goes from here but this daughter of Dane Shadow has plenty of options over further ground.

No-one expected that! (Even the Guru KWH vet team pictured below)

When Gerry Harvey sent his Group 2 winning mare, Fair Embrace, to Dane Shadow this year it was in hope that this G2 winning mare could find some luck in the breeding barn having missed the last 3 seasons running. She was covered early by Dane Shadow and when up for her first scan it was revealed not only had she been covered successfully but there were triplets.

An amazing result and here is hoping Fair Embrace's return to her birthplace continues to be a successful story for all concerned.

Fair Embrace has an exciting daughter by Redoute’s Choice named Rose Pattern ($9.50) taking on Shadow West ($4) in Saturday's Reginald Allen Handicap at Rosehill. A winner on debut it will be an interesting clash with Shadow West who is reported to be flying.

Shadow West (AUS) 2008 (F. by Dane Shadow-Best Out West) - Passed in at $140K Magics 2010. Reports from stable are very encouraging but there is some very well bred competition in this race, the winner will likely go on with it from here. Good luck to her breeder/owner Graham Mapp.

Hurtle Myrtle (AUS) 2006 (F. by Dane Shadow-Ravenswood) - Sold for $55K at Classic 2008 and has won 2x Group 2's and is Group 1 placed. Watch her go around and save up for later races me thinks. Good luck to her breeder Grahame Mapp.
